United Fall to Late Defeat Against Hassocks

9 months ago By Dean Allchin

A late effort from Phil Gault saw Hassocks leave The Oval with all three points as Eastbourne United AFC were defeated 2-1

The United starting XI showed four changes to the side beaten at Arundel the week previously, with Liam Baitup getting married, while Peter Featherstone and Adam Davidson were also absent and Zak Dove dropping to the bench.
Into the side came Jack Troak, Shaun Lee, Tyler O’Callaghan and Ollie Sotoyinbo, with Dean Stevens taking over the captain’s armband in the absence of Davidson.
The first half saw very little in the way of goalmouth action, with the only real effort of any note coming just after the half hour mark when Max Hollobone had former United ‘keeper James Broadbent scrambling to tip an effort past the post.
The second half was less than five minutes old when the deadlock was broken as the ball fell kindly to Liam Benson who fired a fierce effort towards goal that flew past Phil Hawkins, albeit with the aid of a deflection off Ryan Paul who attempted the block the effort.
The visitors could have had a second soon after as Jack Rowe-Hurst was left unmarked at the far post, but he could only drag his effort wide of the upright.
United found a way back into the game with twenty minutes remaining as Matt Cunnington, who had been a constant threat on the wing, cut inside and powered into the area only to be met by a clumsy and mistimed tackle by Hassocks’ Tom Barnes, leaving the referee no option but to award a penalty.
Up stepped Dean Stevens to rifle home the spot kick and bring United back onto level terms.
The game looked to be petering out into a draw until two minutes from time, Rowe-Hurst hit a diagonal cross that split Troak and Paul, allowing Phil Gault to volley past Hawkins and nestle the ball in the bottom corner to seal victory
