United steam past the Dockers

In a world of cliches…

Very few things in life are absolutely inevitable; death, taxes, and non-stop rain every time you visit Newhaven FC. So it was on Saturday that once again the rain started mid morning and continued until the Referee blew the Final whistle in between times East one United were looking to extend their unbeaten run against the team that, unusually, have been inconsistent this year.

In recent weeks, United have settled into a pattern-putting the opposition under constant pressure over the first 15 minutes, and this was no different. Newhaven however were very much up for the fight! Two first class saves in the first ten minutes from debutant Alieu Seckha kept it scoreless, but the pressure was very definitely on- Wilson did his best out wide, putting pressure on the Dockers defence . Ollie Hull went close, his curled effort just evading the upright, and Charlie Ball scooped over from a Wilson cross. Joe Overy has looked impressive since moving to the Oval, and it was him once again on twenty minutes who jinked through the box, cheekily nutmegging the keeper to make it 1-0.United started to turn the screw tighter- Charlie Ball’s fearsome effort left the keepers hands stinging on the half hour, before T’yano Wilson went through the entire defence, only to see his shot saved again. So it was that the teams went in at 0-1, United though not yet in a position to relax.

Almost immediately after the break, Wilson saw yellow, and was replaced by the equally impressive Mason Creese. Both teams had efforts, and Jordan Ray picked up a yellow for his, before James Hull superbly fed into the box, Creese reacting quickest to make it 0-2 and United breathed a bit easier. Hull had an effort well saved before man of the match Seckha pulled off another good stop for United. The persistent rain was taking its toll, and United freshened up with Anthony Thomas and Mufaro Huchu replacing Ball and James Hull. Deep into injury time, Teddy Loft came on for Overy, the prolific under 18s goalscorer getting more time with the senior squad, and bringing the average age of the United team down to ridiculous levels! As the referee was checking with the linesmen, the Dockers snuck a consolation goal, Seckha equally furious and heartbroken, but the prize was already won. Three more points on the road and at least temporarily up to seventh in the table.

Saturday will be another stern test as Horsham YM are the visitors to the Oval Arena, currently fourth in the table, United know that this is a genuine six pointer
