In footballing analogy terms, the referee has already indicated how much of the season is left, and checked with both linesmen; For some mid table clubs, the thoughts of summer holidays are already at the forefront, however, this is not the case at Eastbourne United!
In November it was looking like a mid table season, but since then, a remarkable run has put them in with first a very slim, and now a realistic chance on sneaking into the playoffs for a second consecutive season. In order to achieve this, United had to win both Easter matches, starting at The sports park, where Peacehaven & Telscombe currently hold the fifth place that both teams are going for. United only had one change, with Dan Hull returning and Jordan Ray dropping to the bench.
There’s an acknowledgement generally that there is no such thing as a 1-0 massacre. Only one goal in it, tight game, right? Not for a moment. From first to last minute it was one way traffic. On a glorious afternoon, the sun appeared to be shine in Haven’s faces as they struggled to pick up the ball. James Hull, Charlie Ball and Joe Overy all went close, T’yano Wilson skipped past defenders like they were training mannequins, and yet that final moment just did not happen, former United keeper James Broadbent must have wondered how the teams went in at 0-0.
The second half started the same way, Seckha in the United goal looking like he might pop off for a quick shower and freshen up while nothing was happening, and yet still it remained 0-0. On the hour mark, yet another fast low cross came in, this time James Hull had no time to think about it, just an instinctive turn and shot, and the entire crowd knew that we had a winner!
So it remained, as one sided a 1-0 as you are ever likely to see, and the action turns to Bank Holiday Monday, as United host Seaford Town, while Peacehaven face bitter rivals Newhaven, themselves in seventh and looking to sneak up on the playoffs. It’s an 11 kick off at both games, a win for United and for Newhaven will reduce the gap to just two points - keep watching this space!!
