Last Minute Strike Secures Vital Victory

United made it 8 league victories out of the last 9 after defeating Little Common at Little Common Rec.
Following an enforced two week spell without a fixture due to the recent cold weather, United went into the game looking to continue their good form which has seen the club rise to 4th place in SCFL Division 2 in the second half of the season.

United kept faith with the same side that were victorious last time out over Mile Oak, with Billy Trickett making his return the club that he left to join EUAFC in August.
Common, who have had resurgence under player/manager Russell Elridge were looking to bounce back from a 3-2 defeat to second bottom Midhurst & Easebourne and gain 3 points in their quest to pull away from the bottom half of the table.

On a slippery pitch, neither team was able to press home any early advantage and much of the first 15 minutes was played in midfield.
United had half-chances through leading scorer Pete Cooper and Simon Catt, but neither found quite enough to be Jon Saunders in the Common goal.
On 18 minutes, Tony Russell made space on the left wing and whipped in a teasing cross which was inches too high for Jamie Bunn to reach at the far post.
Russell was again involved after 30 minutes when some neat interplay with Cooper saw space being made 20 yards from goal; Russell attempted to curl the ball into the top corner but only succeeded in clearing the crossbar.
A minute later, in similar circumstances, Russell had another strike from 12 yards out that just passed by the outside of the Common far post.
Pete Cooper came the closest to opening the scoring when his effort was foiled by Saunders at the near post after a deflected Simon Catt cross. From the resulting save, Common counter attacked and forced Adam Sargent into a smart save with his feet at his near post.
United took the lead that their retention of possession deserved when Catt split the Common defence with an inch perfect ball to Cooper, who calmly took the ball on and slotted home to send United into the break with a one goal advantage.

The second half began in the same vein as the first with neither team taking advantage in midfield. United looked to freshen things up on an increasingly heavy pitch as Liam Baitup was introduced into the action on 59 minutes, replacing Jamie Bunn.
With the wind and rain now starting to dominate the game, Common found their way back into the match on 67 minutes as United weren’t quick enough to close down a short corner which gave Dominic Cruttenden the time and space to hit a looping effort from 25 yards over the outstretched dive of Sargent.
United introduced their second sub of the match on 74 minutes when left back Ben Hughes was replaced by Gianluca Del-Gaudio.
Little Common now pushed forward and showed more attacking threat than had previously been seen during the game and were rewarded on 76 minutes as a speculative header from Callum Wooler squirmed through Sargent’s hand and crept over the goaline.
With the light beginning to fail, United had to raise their game to avoid a repeat of the home defeat to Common in August and got their reward on 85 minutes when central defender Pete Featherstone found space in the area after good build up play from Catt and Trickett to fire home at the near post for his first ever United goal.
With time running out, Baitup found space to strike an effort at goal that was deflected wide for a corner.
United pushed bodies forward in the hope of getting a late winner as Catt fired in an inch perfect corner that was met by the head of Trickett which cannoned against the bar, Gianluca Del-Gaudio pounced on the rebound but saw his effort blocked on the line before the ball fell to Shaun Lee who rifled the ball home beyond the despairing dives of the Common defence to secure a last minute victory and sees United draw level on points with third placed Dorking Wanderers.
