United Strike Seven to Despatch Crawley Down Gatwick

Dean Allchin23 Aug 2014 - 19:05

Eastbourne United AFC continued their strong start to the season after defeating Crawley Down Gatwick 7-1, with Wes Tate scoring a hat-trick

Peter Featherstone made his first start of the season after serving a three game suspension picked up at the tail end of last season, while Adam Sargent, Andy Corrigan, Lucas Mann and Jonno Melia also returned to the starting XI.

It took 23 minutes for United to opening the scoring after Corrigan saw an effort blocked and Paul Rogers capitalised on uncertainty in the visiting defence to place the ball under ‘keeper Shayne Goldsmith.
Dan Pollard forced Goldsmith into a superb full length diving save ten minutes later as he struck a half volley from 25 yards that the ‘keeper did well to turn around the post.
On 39 minutes, Tate struck his first of the afternoon with a free kick that squirmed through the grip of Goldsmith and into the back of the net.
On the stroke of half time, Tate doubled his tally for the afternoon from the penalty spot after Crawley Captain Blair Cooney was adjudged to have handled inside the area after a Lucas Mann cross.

Crawley Down pulled a goal back on 53 minutes through Cieran Steer, but United brought on the returning Jason Taylor ten minutes later; and reaped the rewards.
A perfectly timed ball over the top of the Crawley defence by Rogers saw Taylor through on goal, before Cooney conceded a second penalty of the afternoon when he pulled Taylor down when he was clean through on goal.
To add insult to injury, the anvils saw their captain dismissed as he was the last man and then saw Tate despatch his penalty past Goldsmith.
Rogers was again involved in United’s fifth of the afternoon as he showed great perseverance in midfield to win possession and deliver a pass to Camara, who in turn struck a low cross to Taylor who flicked the ball into the back of the net.
Taylor got his second of the afternoon on 89 minutes as he outpaced the visiting defence to slot home after an intricate lobbed pass from Dave Smart.
Jonno Melia rounded off a successful after for United in time added on as he scored number seven when he reacted the quickest to fire home a Camara effort that had been spilt by Goldsmith for his first goal since joining from Lancing in the summer.
