Gardner Earns United Chichester Point

Dean Allchin7 Mar 2015 - 22:48

Mike Gardner struck on the stroke of half time as Eastbourne United AFC returned from Chichester City with a point following a 1-1 draw

United will feel slightly aggrieved not to have returned from West Sussex with all three points, but wayward finishing ultimately proved to be their downfall.
Gardner and Ashley Jarvis came into the side that defeated Pagham in midweek, with Andy Corrigan and Peter Featherstone the men replaced.
A poor start saw United fall behind inside five minutes as Alex Ansa-McIntyre’s left wing cross fell to the unmarked Chichester player/manager Daren Pearce at the far post as he drilled an effort past Russ Tanner.
It took United a further ten minutes to settle into any sort of rhythm, as Wes Tate latched onto a long throw from Gardner, but fired over from 25 yards.
Tate found himself in the referees book little over a minute later for an uncharacteristic late tackle , leaving the influential midfielder walking a disciplinary tightrope.
Jason Taylor saw a goalbound effort deflected into the path of Peter Cooper, whose effort in turn was thwarted by the feet of home ‘keeper Anthony Ender.
Josh Case fired wide at the other end, while Michael Frangou ballooned over from 12 yards after dispossessing Jarvis in the defensive third.
The energetic Joe Summerbell saw a half volley go narrowly over the crossbar from 30 yards as United searched for an equaliser.
With the half time whistle fast approaching, the equaliser did eventually arrive.
A scramble inside the Chichester box saw the ball fall to at the feet of Gardner who saw his effort pass Ender for his 3rd goal of the season, in similar circumstances to his previous strike against Loxwood last month.
The effort gave United the incentive after the half time interval, with Matt Geard looking to break down the home defence with his range of passing, while Summerbell and Dean Stevens looked to intercept and control the game from midfield.
Tate saw two efforts clear the bar in quick succession as United failed to fully test Ender.
United changed to 4-4-2 with a quarter of the game to play, with Cooper withdrawn and replaced by George Marshall, while Taylor and Tate pushed further forward.
Despite the change, United failed to press Ender into meaningful action, while United were indebted to Tanner for preserving a point as he got down quickly in the fourth minute of stoppage time to deny Chichester.
The result leaves United in 10th place in Macron Store SCFL Division One on 41 points with 9 fixtures left to play
