United were missing the experience of Russ Tanner, Wes Tate and Pete Cooper in the starting line-up, with the young duo of Dan Hutchins and Max Taylor making their debuts after joining in midweek.
Lancing saw the first opportunity of the match goes awry as Jake Mills pulled wide of Hutchins in the United goal after Mike Williamson has broken on the left wing, before Aaron Capon, playing as a central striker, poked an effort wide under pressure from Lancing ‘keeper Callum Fidler after an enticing ball into the area from Jason Taylor.
Capon saw a diving header tipped over by Fidler before debutant Taylor opened the scoring as he poked home from close range after Matt Geard had been thwarted inside the area.
From the restart, Lancing immediately attacked and saw the ball go narrowly wide of Hutchins’ far post.
Max Taylor had a golden opportunity to double his tally after picking up a loose ball inside the Lancing half, but he was denied by Fidler and the follow up from Capon was well blocked by the recovering home defence.
Mills fired a warning of intent towards United with a 20yd free-kick that rattled the crossbar, before former United striker Tyler Goatcher sliced an effort wide when well placed.
Lancing were a constant attacking threat throughout the contest and got onto level terms with fifteen minutes to play as a right wing corner sparked a scramble inside the six yard box that ended with Neil Munday beating Hutchins.
The energetic Joe Summerbell found Fidler in imperious form as a curling 20yd effort was tipped onto the bar and out for a corner, with Fidler again showing great agility to deny Brad Lewis less than a minute later from a free kick.
With a draw looking likely and time running out, Williamson hit a thunderous winner past Hutchins, which incensed the United side after a throw-in was awarded to Lancing in the build up to the goal, a decision they believe to have gone the wrong way.
