The game had started well enough for United as Lucas Mann gave Simon Rowland’s men a 12th minute as he was left unmarked at the far post to head home Mike Gardners’ centre following a corner from Wes Tate.
Hassocks ‘keeper George Willett denied United a second goal five minutes later as an inviting crossfield ball from Brad Lewis looped off the head of visiting defender Bradley Tighe, with Willett able change direction and stop the ball from crossing the line.
A stubborn visiting defence denied United the opportunity to force any clear cut chances, with a 30 yard effort from Joe Summerbell the closest either side came to scoring.
A spell of pressure at the start of the second half saw Willett forced into action as he got down well to deny Summerbell before smothering the ball at the feet of Wes Tate minutes later.
Hassocks first real test on Russ Tanner’s goal came in the 73rd minute as Nathan Miles saw a flicked header from an inswinging corner land on top of the net.
Hassocks drew level on 82 minutes as a left wing cross wasn’t sufficiently dealt with and saw Miles find the top corner of Tanners’ goal with the outside of his right boot.
Four minutes later, the comeback was completed as United again failed to clear as Bradley Bant headed home at the far post, despite the best efforts of Tanner.
United’s pursuit of a late equaliser was effectively ended on 89 minutes as Lewis was shown a straight red card for foul and abuse language towards the assistant referee as United slipped to their eighth league defeat of the season
