Dan Pollard made his first start since fracturing his ankle in October alongside Mike Gardner in defence, while the Ryan McBride led the line on his first start since returning to the club, Matt Geard made his first start in a white shirt
Geard had the first chance of the match, but his effort was weak and comfortably saved by Jake Buss in the Newhaven goal.
At the other end of the pitch, Jayson Sowter’s long range strike was easily held by Russ Tanner.
McBride was denied a perfect start to his second spell at The Oval after having an effort ruled out for offside, and Buss had to be at his best to deny Jason Taylor when through one-on-one.
Two former United players combined as Ryan Walton connected with an Adam Kneller free-kick but saw his weak volley saved by Tanner. Just prior to half-time, United found themselves ahead as McBride flicked on a clearance from Tanner, presenting Wes Tate a clear run at goal to which he duly obliged and made no mistake in lifting the ball over Buss.
Five minutes after the break Taylor could have doubled United’s lead, but slipped at the crucial moment after rounding Buss.
Soon after, Newhaven were back on level terms after Pete Featherstone, who had been brought on for Pollard, misjudged a clearance from Goddard which saw Walton to advance with the ball and paly in Connor to fired past Tanner.
Four minutes later the home side were given a chance to take the lead after Featherstone held back Connor in the United box and a penalty was awarded, with Walton stepping up and finding the back of the net.
Wes Tate saw a free-kick on the left beaten away by Buss, who was left largely untroubled following the second goal.
Five minutes from time, the game was made safe as James Rhodes galloped forward with the ball and played in Connor, who got an inch of space away from Mike Gardner as he slotted past Tanner to secure a seventh win on the bounce for Newhaven
