United Strike Gold Against Littlehampton

United Strike Gold Against Littlehampton

Dean Allchin7 Feb 2015 - 23:07

Wes Tate was at the double as Eastbourne United AFC produced arguably their best performance of the season to see off title chasing Littlehampton Town

The enigmatic midfielder saw a trademark free kick and penalty sandwiched either side of a Jason Taylor effort to seal victory, and become the first team to deny Littlehampton scoring in a league fixture this season.
Brad Lewis returned to the side in place of the injured Adam Davidson for the only change from the side that were victorious against Hailsham Town in midweek.
Tate saw an early effort parried by ‘keeper Jon Hendrick into the path of Aaron Capon, but the full back was only able to lift his effort over the bar.
At the other end of the pitch, Russ Tanner made a fine diving stop to deny Scott Packer as the game began at a velocious pace.
Taylor saw an 18 yard effort curl wide of the post after some intricate build up play with Joe Summerbell and Peter Cooper involved.
A route one ball from Tanner was flicked on by Cooper to Tate on the stroke of half time, but Hendrick got the faintest of touches on the ball to turn the ball behind for a corner despite slipping whilst changing direction.
Three minutes into the second half, Tate did find the back of the net with a trademark free kick from 20 yards that nestled in the far corner after a foul on Cooper.
United doubled their lead with thirty minutes remaining, with Tate and Cooper once again involved before the ball was met by the onrushing Taylor who confidently guided the ball past Hendrick.
Two became three ten minutes later when Matt Geard was brought down by Hendrick inside the penalty box, giving Tate the opportunity to extend his league tally to 14 for the season; to which he obliged by firing his penalty low past the outstretched hand of Hendrick.
It wasn’t all one way traffic however as United captain Dan Pollard made a superb last ditch tackle to deny Kieron Pamment a shot at goal, before Littlehampton sub George Gaskin saw an effort ruled out for offside.
Hendrick denied Tate his hat-trick with a superb one handed save from another free-kick while Tanner preserved his first clean sheet in nine league games at the death as he rushed to thwart George Landais as United picked up a richly deserved three points and back to back league victories for the first time in two months
