United Win Halloween Thriller at Shoreham

United Win Halloween Thriller at Shoreham

Dean Allchin1 Nov 2015 - 18:19

Eastbourne United AFC made it four league wins in the last six with a 4-3 victory over Shoreham

The victory was United’s first league victory away from The Oval this season and ended Shoreham’s four game unbeaten run under new manager Simon Funnell.
United manager Tobi Hutchinson, a former league and cup winning player with Shoreham, welcomed back skipper Adam Davidson into the side with Mike Ginno and Zak Dove also named in Hutchinson’s starting XI.
James Broadbent was tested after ten minutes when Craig Goodsir shot from 25 yards, but the United ‘keeper pushed his effort away.
The opening goal of an eventful afternoon came in the 19th minutes as leading scorer Liam Baitup caught Shoreham ‘keeper Seb Bos off his line and lobbed the ball goalwards, with the ball bouncing once before nestling in the back of the net despite the best efforts of a scrambling Bos.
The lead would only last seven minutes however as a quick thrown in on the right ended at the feet of Brad O’Connor rifled an effort from the edge of the area that left Broadbent with no chance.
United regained their lead in the 38th minute following some strong hold up play from Peter Cooper, who teed up Dean Stevens and the United midfielder struck his effort past Bos from 25 yards.
A quick-fire third followed, with Cooper again involved as he set up Zak Dove who hit a low effort from 12 yards that went in off the underside of Bos.
The goals continued to flow as Shoreham got their second of the afternoon as a free kick into the area won in the air by Marc Pelling, who headed back across goal as Okwute Izuchukwu rose above Broadbent to nod home.
From the resulting kick off, United wasted possession and saw the ball fall at the feet of Goodsir who unleashed a ferocious drive from fully 40 yards that flew by Broadbent as Shoreham drew level.
Shoreham could have gone into the break with the advantage, but Broadbent had to be off his line quickly to smother at the feet of Izuchukwu.
Dove had the first opening of the second half, but his effort was always swerving away from goal, while at the other end Broadbent denied the dangerous Goodsir.
Baitup was denied by Bos from a narrow angle after outpacing Scott Johnson, while Jamie Bunn saw a header cleared from the goaline.
Toby Clifford was introduced to the fray with fifteen minutes remaining and found himself the hero of the afternoon as he pounced on a defensive error to fire past Bos from six yards and send the three points back to The Oval
