New Year Woe for United

New Year Woe for United

Dean Allchin6 Jan 2013 - 22:04

Eastbourne United AFC suffered a disappointing start to 2013 after a 3-1 defeat to Storrington on Saturday.

Both sides were playing their first fixture in three weeks after an enforced Christmas break owing to the recent poor weather and United made one change to the side that defeated Oakwood 7-1 as Gianluca Del-Gaudio replaced the unavailable Pete Cooper.

United started the stronger with Jamie Bunn, Jack Divall and Liam Baitup putting the home defence under some early pressure before a counter attack saw Storrington’s John Rhodie loop an effort over Adam Sargent but struck the crossbar.
United found themselves behind after 14 minutes when Sargent miscued a routine clearance straight to the feet of Joe Warner who played in strike partner Liam Humphreys who fired home and unstoppable drive.
Storrington, who United defeated 6-0 on the opening day of the season, soon got a second goal after a free-kick from Will Conway squirmed through the grasp of Sargent as United were left with a mountain to climb in order to get anything out of the match.
United’s response was immediate as Baitup put an effort narrowly past the post and Divall came even closer as his drive was well saved by home ‘keeper Jason Downer, but United went into the half time interval trailing for only the second time of the season.
A change of formation at half time saw United go with an attacking 3-5-2 formation and saw Divall and Baitup presented with a couple of half chances while Sargent had to be at his acrobatic best at the other end to prevent a third goal.
Storrington did make it three on 63 minutes when Sargent was caught in possession in his own area and proceeded to bring down the Storrington attacker for a penalty.
Sargent could count himself lucky to only see a yellow card from match referee Kevin Dawson but saw Warner dispatch his penalty home as United’s unbeaten run stretching back to September all but disappeared.
Shaun Lee did manage to pull United back into the game with a looping 20 yard effort with twenty minutes left, but it was too little too late as United slipped to 5th in Division Two.
Next up for United is Loxwood at The Oval on Saturday 12th January (3pm)

United: Sargent; Filsell, Del-Gaudio (Goodwin 54), Lee, Featherstone, Stracey, Bunn (Harrison 73), Simmonds, Divall, Baitup, Barden (Farrant 67)
