Late Show Secures Vital Victory

An instinctive 90th minute strike from Liam Baitup secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory for Eastbourne United AFC over Seaford Town on Tuesday night

On a bitterly cold evening at The Crouch, former United striker Drew Greenall had the first clear opportunity of the contest but the tall frontman failed to test Lee Daubeney as his shot flew past the post for a goal kick.
Both sides struggled with the hard bobbly pitch initially, but it took just ten minutes for United to take the lead as a perfectly weighted crossfield pass from Pete Cooper was met by the run of Jamie Bunn who outpaced the home defence to unleash a powerful drive across Seaford ‘keeper Levett and into the bottom corner of the net.
Chances were few and far between the first half but Seaford felt they should have been awarded a penalty as Greenall went down inside the area, but the match referee deemed there was no contact and play continued.
United suffered a double sucker punch on the stroke of half-time as Adam Daubeney, son of United manager Paul, stuck out a foot to guide home a free kick past his brother Lee in the United goal to draw the Badgers level before Greenall reacted quickest after a Seaford corner was partially cleared to strike home and give them the lead.
United were forced into a half-time substitution after Gianluca Del-Gaudio was withdrawn in order for him to visit A&E as a precaution following an ariel clash with Greenall.
United stepped up a gear in the second half, with Bunn and Jack Divall both looking dangerous on the wings and pressuring the home defence.
With twenty minutes of the half played, United were level. Danny Simmonds right wing free-kick could only be cleared as far as Bunn who looped the ball back into the six yard box for Divall to rise highest between a group of players to bring United level.
Divall was unlucky again minutes later when his surging run and cross for Cooper was deflected behind for a corner before he was replaced by recent signing Danny Wilmott.
With the final whistle approaching, gaps began to appear in the Seaford backline and Nick Barden exploited this as he picked out Cooper, who turned with the ball just inside the box and fed an unmarked Baitup at the back post who rifled home his shot past Levett as a jubilant United bench celebrated what could be a vital win in the race for promotion to SCFL Division One.

United: Daubeney; Simmonds, Del-Gaudio (Hughes 46), Sherriff, Featherstone ©, Stracey, Bunn, Davidson (Barden 67), Cooper, Baitup, Divall (Wilmott 85)
