United Hit Oakwood for Five

Dean Allchin7 Apr 2013 - 20:54

Eastbourne United AFC hit five goals for the second consecutive away fixture after defeating Oakwood 5-2 at Tinsley Lane in a fixture that also saw Liam Baitup complete his fifth hat-trick of the season

United welcomed back Jamie Bunn, Grant Harrison and Danny Simmonds into the starting line-up, with Luke Snashall and Calum Sherriff both absent due to work and Ben Farrant playing for the reserve team in the only changes from the Easter Monday victory at Westfield.

On a very dry, but flat surface United showed their intent in the first thirty seconds as Jack Divall chased Oakwood ‘keeper Goodwin and nearly caught the ‘keeper out, but his clearance struck Divall and went wide of the post.
Divall and strike partner Baitup both came close to opening the scoring but Oakwood had chances of their own with Bigood and Cane going close but failing to trouble Adam Sargent.
With 26 minutes played, United broke the deadlock when an inviting Adam Davidson cross was controlled into the path of Baitup by Divall and United’s leading scorer drove the ball low past Goodwin’s dive for league goal number 31 of the season.
Bigood again went close for the home side with a long range effort that just cleared the bar before Gianluca Del-Gaudio received the ball on the left wing and proceeded to play an inch perfect through ball to Divall who slotted past Goodwin at his near post to double United’s lead.
As the half drew to a close, United rounded off a polished first half performance when Jack Mclean surged forward with the ball and found Baitup on the edge of the area who then doubled his tally for the afternoon with the aid of a deflection.
There was no let up from United at the start of the second half as Jack Mclean made it four. Mclean beat two defenders on the wing before delivering a cross-cum-shot that went in off the far post as United appeared to be cruising to a routine victory.
Baitup was denied his hat-trick on 50 minutes by a fantastic fingertip save by Goodwin and again went close with a header following a Simmonds free-kick.
On 64 minutes, Oakwood pulled a goal back when an inviting cross field pass found Cane who finished with aplomb past Sargent.
Just five minutes later, Oakwood pulled a second goal back as United failed to deal with an in swinging corner as the ball fell to Agate who smashed the ball home as the home side began to build up a head of steam.
United brought on Pete Cooper and the striker was unlucky not to add his name to the scoresheet after his ferocious left footed drive hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced to safety.
Cooper was again denied on the stroke of full time by Goodwin as his excellent overhead kick was met by an equally impressive fingertip save onto the bar, but Baitup was on hand the slot the rebound through the ‘keepers legs and score his 33rd league goal of the season to make it five for United.
Cooper and Baitup linked up again in injury time but Baitup was to be denied his fourth of the match when he was denied by the feet of Goodwin.
The victory leaves United in 3rd place in SCFL Division Two; six points clear of nearest challengers Little Common who they meet on Tuesday evening (7:30)

United: Sargent; Bunn, Harrison (Cooper 63), Simmonds, Featherstone, Stracey, Mclean (Barden 76), Davidson (Miszkiewcz 58), Divall, Baitup, Del-Gaudio
