United made one change to the side that defeated Oakwood at the weekend, with Calum Sherriff returning in the place of Grant Harrison.
Sheriff came close to his first ever United goal on seven minutes when his header from a corner was well saved by Common goalkeeper Jon Saunders.
Jack Mclean nearly caught Saunders out with an audacious effort from distance, but from the resulting goal kick, Common immediately went up the other end and Lewis Hole gave them a ninth minute lead with a left footed effort that crept underneath Adam Sargent.
Saunders was called into action two minutes later with an excellent acrobatic stop to deny Liam Baitup before ex United striker Steve Morris, Chris Cumming-Bart and Hole all went close for Common.
United drew level with twenty-six minutes played when Baitup struck a powerful effort from 25 yards that went over a diving Saunders
It took United just 25 seconds of the second half to take the lead as Mclean pounced on a slip in the Common defence to slot the ball past the advancing Saunders for his third goal in as many games since returning to the first team picture.
United looked in control for much of the second half, but Common always looked threatening going forward as Cumming-Bart fired just wide and Morris had a powerful effort well saved by Sargent. Saunders made an important save at the other end from Divall, who also flashed a shot just over with twenty minutes remaining.
In the final fifteen minutes, Common started to spend more time in the United half and as the game wore on, the hosts equalised in the 85th minute.
Substitute Adam Smith latched onto Russell Eldridge’s crossfield ball and lobbed it over a stranded Sargent.
United’s hearts were in their mouths two minutes later when Morris hit the outside of the post with a 25-yard piledriver, but the worst was yet to come
Sargent failed to get enough distance on his punch under pressure from Morris and Cruttenden was on hand to lift the ball home into an empty net.
The drama didn’t end there though as United thought they had earned a penalty when Anthony Cooper challenged Divall in the corner of the box more than seven minutes into added time only for the referee to blow for full time instead of a spot-kick, a decision that sparked anger and outrage among the United bench, players and fans alike.
